Where to look for Fossils at Portishead?

(Battery Point Foreshore) - 2004

First stop is at Battery Point. Search all the rocks lying around on the foreshore, most of the good specimens can be collected in this way and this required no tools. The foreshore is right next to the car park which makes this spot ideal for children.

(Battery Point) - 2004

Take a look in the rocks near Battery Point, you should see layers of Crinoids and some corals. These are again best collected from the loose rocks at the base of the cliff.

(Second small cliff) - 2004

Walking South West, a second cliff of Carboniferous Crinoidal Limestone can be seen, again corals and crinoids can be collected here but this is not as productive as finding those at Battery Point and along the foreshore.

(Woodhill Bay Devonian Rocks) - 2004

At the opposite end of Woodhill Bay, the rocks change to Devonian. These are famous fish beds. In the past some superb specimens including complete fish have been collected here. Look in the rocks on the foreshore.
